Steven joined BVO in July 2015 after working in a medium sized accountancy practice in the City for seven years. Prior to that he worked in one of the larger New Zealand corporates for six years.
Steven has a wide range of experience in general compliance and taxation. His experience includes working with family owned-and-operated groups, budgets and management accounts. Steven has a particular interest in working closely with his clients to develop their businesses and achieve their goals.
Outside of work, Steven can be found spending time with family, playing badminton and at the gym.
RUPINDER DHALIWALSENIOR ACCOUNTANT
Rupinder completed her Post Graduate and Doctorate degrees from Panjab University Chandigarh before moving to New Zealand. She completed refresher studies at University of Auckland to upskill to NZ law and practices.
Rupinder started her career in Auditing but gradually shifted to Business Advisory with a focus on accounting and tax compliance.
She has been working in Chartered Accountancy firms since 2006 and has a wealth of experience.
Rupinder’s passion away from work is gardening. She also enjoys reading, travelling and spending time with family.
STEPHEN RUTHERFORDTAX LEAD
Steve joined the BVO team in July 2018. He is a Chartered Accountant with 30 plus years
experience in both the public and private sector.
Prior to moving to BVO he was employed by the Chartered Accountants of Australia and
New Zealand in the New Zealand Tax Policy team. Steve has also worked previously with
a major second tier firm and Inland Revenue Department. Steve has been involved
with all the major tax developments over the last ten years and now brings his unique
expertise and skills to BVO.
Steve is able to assist you to comply with your New Zealand tax obligations and dealing with
Inland Revenue queries and audits.
Outside of work Steve enjoys spending time with his wife and following various sporting
codes from the sideline.
ROBERT STODDARDSENIOR ACCOUNTANT
Robert has a total of 25 years experience in chartered accountancy. He has also had commercial experience being the financial controller and CFO for nine years with Treescape Limited, a major arboricultural company. Robert assists clients with their accounting, audit and tax compliance.
Robert’s interests are shooting, walking, watching his sons play sport and enjoying the odd glass of wine.
FLORA GOHSENIOR ACCOUNTANT
Flora graduated from National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Accountancy degree and worked with KPMG and in the banking industry in Singapore before coming to New Zealand.
Flora has been with BVO since 1995 and she contracts to BVO on a part-time basis. She enjoys chartered accountancy work, in particular dealing with clients and ensuring that their tax affairs are in order.
Flora’s personal interests include traveling, reading and being involved in her children’s sporting activities.
DEEPAK LALASENIOR ACCOUNTANT
Deepak first began with BVO in 1997 as a member of Dan Virtue’s (now Alex Houghton’s) team providing general accounting, audit and taxation services to clients involved in a wide array of industries ranging from investment, wholesale, distribution, retail, horticulture and commercial property. He has witnessed a number of clients grow exponentially from where they began.
Outside of work, he is a very keen hockey player, maintaining his fitness by playing weekly in a competitive grade
LYNETTE BYWATERIT OPERATOR
Lynette has been with BVO since 2002, as the head of our computer processing company. Lynette is the firm’s expert on Cash Manager, MYOB, Bank Link and Xero.
Outside of work, Lynette’s interests revolve around her two teenage children and their many activities, and also walking her dog on West Auckland beaches.
HILARY BISHOPSENIOR ACCOUNTANT
Hilary started her working career with a ‘big 4’ accountancy practice, where she gained experience in insolvency, audit and business services. She then moved into the corporate world and held senior accounting positions in a variety of industries before returning to chartered accounting in 1999.
Hilary has worked in chartered accounting on a part-time basis while raising family and has specialised knowledge in Xero conversions and training.
Hilary’s interests outside of work include keeping fit through ocean swimming, walking, cycling and yoga. She also enjoys reading, travel and spending time at the family bach at Matapouri.
RAHUL SINGHSENIOR ACCOUNTANT
For the last six years Rahul has been working in chartered accountancy firms which have provided him a range of skills in general compliance and taxation within a wide range of industries. In between he has also had experience in the commercial environment working as a financial accountant for a large corporate.
Outside of work his interests include spending time with his family and supporting his favourite team – the Warriors.
PAULINE HUASSISTANT ACCOUNTANT MANAGER
Pauline, a Chartered Accountant, brings over 6 years of experience to BVO.
The experience Pauline has gained has been from New Zealand Chartered Accounting firms including larger mid-tier firms.
Pauline, a fluent English, Cantonese and Mandarin speaker, has substantial experience in investment trusts and trading enterprises. Pauline also has a specific interest in accounting and business system process improvements.
Outside of work Pauline enjoys cooking and taking care of her cat.
Julie has been with BVO since 2007, and her previous secretarial experience has been with government and corporate entities. She has a love of cooking, reading and catching up with friends.
RICHARD WALSHSENIOR ACCOUNTANT
Richard started at BVO in March 2009. He has had over fifteen years experience in the CA field in a wide range of areas (farm accounting, liquidations, auditing), but has mostly focused on tax compliance.
In his spare time he enjoys reading, music and swimming.
LINDA MATHESONOPERATIONS MANAGER
Linda is our Operations Manager and is ensuring we continue to successfully expand the firm whilst freeing up Partners to concentrate on clients.
Linda has an extensive corporate background and has dealt with all the practical things in business including HR, Finance, Governance, Sales, Management, Operations, IT as well as experience as a Senior Accountant with us.
Outside of work she is a keen traveller, skier, enjoys biking and walking and taking in our glorious country. Linda also volunteers at a Charitable Trust which raises funds to send deserving students on Youth Leadership courses at Tongariro National Park who couldn’t afford to go otherwise.
JONATHAN HYDESENIOR ACCOUNTANT
Jonathan has over seven years of experience in medium size accountancy practices in New Zealand and Australia as well as commercial experience in the UK.
Jonathan has gained a wealth of experience in general compliance, taxation and management accounting for a wide range of industries.
Outside of work Jonathan enjoys jogging, travelling, hiking, mountain biking and snowboarding.
HELENA BATESSENIOR ACCOUNTANT
Helena joined BVO in September 2009 when she moved to Auckland from Thames where she had been working in an accounting firm for six and a half years.
When Helena is not at work she can be found socialising, shopping, cooking, travelling and following her other interest of make up artistry and beauty therapy.
Currently on maternity leave.
GREG VIRTUEPRACTICE ACCOUNTANT
Greg rejoined BVO in May 2012, is our Practice Accountant , after originally working at BVO as a member of his father Dan Virtue’s (now Alex Houghton’s) team for 10 years from 1997 through to the end of 2007. His time at BVO in those years was spent mainly in compliance-based work with a wide variety of clients as well as performing some auditing work. He has also had various finance roles in his 2 working stints overseas in the UK.
Greg’s passions outside work include tramping, climbing, multi-sporting and off-road running and he is a keen follower of most sports. He has completed 5 overseas climbing expeditions since 2007 and looks forward to hopefully a few more in the next few years.
KAREN EVANSSENIOR ACCOUNTANT
Karen started her career in one of the big 5 accounting practices before heading to London for her big OE, working there for 6 years for two large charities.
Karen returned to NZ and worked in various finance roles in a variety of industries before returning to Chartered Accounting in 2006.
Karen’s interests outside of work include running, swimming and triathlons along with travelling, going to the movies and dining out with friends.
CINDY LIANGASSISTANT ACCOUNTANT
Over the past two years Cindy has been working as an accountant in a business and brings that commercial accounting experience to BVO.Prior to commencing her commercial accounting role, Cindy obtained a Master of Professional Accounting from the University of Auckland which complemented her Bachelor of Management (Public Administration) obtained from the Ocean University of China.
Cindy is a fluent speaker of Mandarin, an enthusiastic learner and has a strong interest in taxation. Cindy is currently pursuing her Chartered Accountants qualification through Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.
Outside of work Cindy enjoys photography, hiking, driving, cooking and spending time with her cat.
Lisa joined BVO in June 1999, originally as a secretary for one of the firm’s former partners, and now as part of Athol Owens team.
In her spare time Lisa enjoys going to the gym and keeping fit, and also baking, reading, gardening and taking her dog for long walks.
DAVID G KNIGHTLEYCONSULTANT
David has re-joined the firm after initially leaving to set up on his own account as a chartered Accountant in Public Practice.
David is a Chartered Accountant and a Qualified Auditor and has been a member of the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand Society for over 40 years. He specialises in audit and assurance engagements of Not-For-Profit Clubs, Societies, Charities, Trusts and other Corporate entities.
In addition to being a Trustee of the National Branch of the International Charity “United Way”, David is also the Treasurer of the Photographic Society of New Zealand Inc.
Aside from photography, David’s other interests include stamp collecting (NZ), tramping, travelling (overseas to visit family), an owner of classic cars and motorsport, where he has been found on occasions fulfilling an “official” role.
David and his wife Hazel, have two sons, one who is married to a Scottish girl and they have a daughter and son living in Edinburgh, Scotland. Their second son lives in Auckland with his wife and daughter.
